How to Spot Fake Pokemon Cards Before You Buy

How to Spot Fake Pokemon Cards Before You Buy

I’ve been collecting Pokémon cards for a few months now, and one thing became clear early — fake Pokémon cards are everywhere.

Online marketplaces, even Instagram sellers — counterfeit Pokémon cards look so real that you won’t notice until they’re in your hand.

Here’s what I’ve learned from comparing cards, watching collectors, and talking to trusted sellers.

1. Feel the Card

Real Pokémon cards have a certain weight and texture.
They feel sturdy and slightly glossy, not flimsy or papery.
If the card bends too easily or feels rough along the edges, it’s likely fake.

2. Look at the Colors

Color is one of the biggest giveaways.
Fake Pokémon cards often have faded or overly bright colors.
Place a real card beside it — the blue back swirl on the real one will look sharper and richer.

3. Check the Font

Pokémon uses a very specific font.
Fakes often mess this up — the letters might look bold, thin, or slightly off-center.
Look closely at the “é” in Pokémon.
If it’s missing or printed incorrectly, that’s a clear sign of a fake.

4. Do the Light Test

Hold the card under a bright light.
A real Pokémon card has a thin black layer in the middle that blocks light.
If light passes through easily — it’s not authentic.

5. Inspect the Holo and Print Quality

The holographic pattern on authentic Pokémon cards is clean and even.
Fakes usually have random, patchy shine or blurry borders.
If you see pixelated text or uneven lines, it’s most likely counterfeit.

6. Buy from Trusted Sellers

If you’re in India, you’ve probably seen Pokémon cards sold on Instagram or local sites.
Before buying:

  • Check reviews, comments, and tagged photos.

  • Ask for close-up shots (front and back).

  • Avoid sellers who hide details or rush the sale.

Collecting Pokémon cards is fun only when your cards are real.
Take your time to verify before buying — the more you observe, the easier it gets to spot a fake.

Slow down, compare, and trust your instincts — it’ll save you a lot of regret later.
